WhatsApp chatbot for business in India: API pricing and setup
How a WhatsApp chatbot works for Indian businesses, what the WhatsApp Business API costs per message, what setup involves, and when a chatbot is worth it.

In India, customers would rather message you on WhatsApp than fill in a form, send an email or wait on hold. That makes WhatsApp the most valuable place for a chatbot: answering questions, sharing order updates and taking bookings in the app your customers already use all day.
This guide explains how a WhatsApp chatbot works, what the WhatsApp Business API costs, what setup involves, and how to decide if it is worth it. To see the kind of conversation it can handle, try our order support chatbot demo. It runs on a website, but the same assistant can answer on WhatsApp.
WhatsApp Business app or WhatsApp Business API?
The WhatsApp Business app is free and runs on one phone. It has quick replies and a greeting message, but no real automation and no way for several staff to share one number properly.
The WhatsApp Business Platform (API) is what chatbots use. It connects your number to software, so an AI assistant can reply, several team members can share the inbox, and messages can link to your systems.
To use the API you need a verified Meta Business account, a phone number that isn't registered on the normal WhatsApp app, and usually a Business Solution Provider (BSP) or a direct connection through Meta's Cloud API.
What the WhatsApp Business API costs
Meta charges per message for messages you send using approved templates, at different rates for each type. For India, current published rates are about:
Marketing messages (offers, announcements): about ₹0.86 per message.
Utility messages (order updates, booking confirmations): about ₹0.12 per message.
Authentication messages (one-time passwords): about ₹0.12 per message.
Replies within 24 hours of a customer messaging you have been free or low cost, though Meta has been changing how these service messages are billed during 2026. All Meta rates are before 18% GST, and Meta updates them regularly, so check the current rate card on Meta's WhatsApp Business pricing page before you budget.
Other costs to plan for
BSP or platform fees: many providers add a monthly fee, a per-message markup, or both.
AI usage: if the bot uses AI to understand and write replies, there is a small usage cost per conversation.
Build and upkeep: designing the conversations, connecting your systems and keeping answers up to date.
What our chatbot build costs
AI chatbot: ₹50K to build plus ₹6K a month, about 1 to 2 weeks.
WhatsApp: the channel setup depends on your Meta account and provider, so it is confirmed in your quote.
Meta, provider and AI usage fees: paid by you, directly, so you can see exactly what you spend.
Our AI chatbot cost guide explains what the build and monthly fee cover.
What a WhatsApp chatbot can do
Answer common questions: prices, timings, delivery areas, fees and documents needed.
Share order updates: confirmed, shipped, out for delivery, delivered.
Take bookings: for clinics, salons, classes and site visits.
Qualify leads: ask a few questions, then pass serious enquiries to your sales team with the details filled in.
Reply in Hindi, English or Hinglish: AI assistants handle mixed language naturally.
Hand over to a person: when a customer asks, or when the bot isn't sure.
Rules that keep you out of trouble
Get opt-in. Only message people who agreed to hear from you on WhatsApp. Meta can restrict numbers that get many blocks or reports.
Use templates properly. Messages you start must use templates Meta has approved.
Handle data carefully. Under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023, collect only what you need and say how you use it.
Don't overdo marketing. Marketing messages cost the most and annoy customers fastest.
When it pays for itself
Count how many WhatsApp messages your team answers each day and how many are the same few questions. If staff spend an hour or more a day on repeat replies, or messages after hours go unanswered until morning, a chatbot usually pays for itself quickly.
Questions people ask
Can I keep my existing WhatsApp number?
Often, yes, but it has to move from the WhatsApp app to the API, after which it can't be used in the normal app. Many businesses use a new number for the API instead.
Do customers know they're talking to a bot?
They should. We set the assistant to say it is an AI assistant and to offer a person whenever someone asks.
Can the bot send bulk messages?
Yes, to opted-in customers using approved templates. Each one is billed per message, so target carefully.
